UPCOMING CONFERENCES FOR EFL/ESL TEACHERS AND RESEARCHERS

CALLS FOR PROPOSALS

New! May 16-17, 2009
The 4th Chinese/English as a Second Language Conference on Reading and Writing Instruction (C/ESL 2009)
National Central University, Jhong-li, Taoyuan County, Taiwan
Proposal submission deadline: January 21, 2009

"The Language Center at National Central University has held the C/ESL conference every two years since 2003 and the one this year is the fourth conference. In the past three conferences, C/ESL has received many good-quality papers which investigated how English or Chinese is acquired as a second language or how to
teach reading and writing efficiently. The one this year is the first to be an international conference and asks for papers internationally. Besides calling for participation from other foreign countries, the conference committee invites two well-known scholars to be the keynote speakers: Carol A. Chapelle and Teng, Shou-Hsin. Carol Chapelle has served as the president of AAAL and the Editor of TESOL quarterly. Teng has served as Director of the Department of Asian Languages & Literatures at the University of Massachusetts, and has been a famous scholar in Chinese L2 teaching. As we know, a special feature about the conference is that it
focuses on two languages at the same time and it's a good chance for researchers to discuss and explore whether some issues investigated in one language are also interesting research topics in the other. Another feature about C/ESL is that it focuses on reading and writing, two important skills for L2, especially FOREIGN
LANGUAGE, learners. In a foreign language learning environment, learners do not have much speech input, so they have to rely on written texts and reading and writing are crucial skills to master. The conference will provide a good chance for researchers to discuss how the two skills can be acquired appropriately."

If you have never presented at a conference, a graduate student conference is a great place to start. This is an annual conference specifically for graduate students majoring in linguistics, applied linguistics, TESOL, TESL, TEFL, and so on. The organizers are currently accepting proposals from graduate students. The papers can be empirical (based on practice) or theoretical (dealing with theories of second language acquisition). Completed studies and work-in-progress will be accepted. Again, this would be a good opportunity for you to start presenting and to see what your future colleagues are doing.

April 3-4, 2009

The annual TexFLEC conference will bring together L2 researchers and teachers and focus on a variety of topics, e.g. computer-assisted language learning, cooperative learning, SLA (second language acquisition), L2 testing, and new literacies. The emphasis is on interdisciplinary collaboration, and thus this would be a great opportunity to present a paper on technology and Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages and also to meet faculty members and researchers representing a variety of Second Language Teaching-related disciplines and discourses.

The 3rd International Wireless Ready Symposium
"Digital Technologies in Language Education"
Nagoya, Japan
Proposal submission deadline: December 20, 2008
Click here to download call for papers and FAQ

Do you use technology in your ESL/EFL classroom? Do you want to meet language teachers and researchers who do? The 3rd International Wireless Ready Symposium will take place simultaneously online (in a virtual three-dimensional universe) and onsite. This format looks new, and the concept is quite unique. The organizers are currently accepting proposals for papers on a number of topics related to technology in language teaching and learning, such as computer-assisted language learning (CALL), interactive technologies in second language acquisition (SLA), computer literacy and language learning, computer-based testing (CBT), wireless technologies and their relevance to second language teaching, and similar technology-related topics. This would be a great opportunity not only to present a paper on technology in English language teaching but also to learn something new from researchers developing cutting-edge digital technologies for the 21st century ESL/EFL learning.
